Common questions about using Countdown Trigger for travel safety.
Do I need cell service to check in?
You need cell service or Wi-Fi at the moment you check in. You can check in via SMS reply (cell service only), email link, or the web dashboard. If you're off-grid for your entire interval, the countdown will expire and trigger your alert.
What if my phone dies?
If you can't check in for any reason — dead phone, lost signal, injury — your countdown will expire at the scheduled time and your emergency contacts will be notified. That's the entire point: it works when you can't.
Can I set different check-in intervals for different trips?
On Pro you can set a 24-hour check-in for a standard trip, a 12-hour interval for a solo day hike, or a 48-hour interval for a multi-day trek, and run several countdowns at once. The free plan covers one countdown with check-ins up to 2 hours.
What do my emergency contacts see?
They receive the exact message you wrote when you set up the countdown. You can include your itinerary, last known location, accommodation details, embassy contact info — whatever would help someone find you.
Is this free?

Can my contacts see my location?
No. Countdown Trigger does not track your location. Your contacts only receive the message you wrote, only when you miss a check-in. There's no real-time tracking or location sharing.
